Though there are three sets, the breaks were for setups. This show is known for the Dawk Staw - one of the most historic versions - and a fine acoustic set. Good Lovin' - standard though classic version After Not Fade Away, Jer calls the 8pm set the 'chicken shit show' (for those who can't take the NYC-style, overnight, late show!). Somebody jokingly calls out for White Rabbit as Pig takes the mic for Hard to Handle. Good Lovin' is a standard read, but it's more or less the classic version (heard on Bear's Choice). Beat it on Down the Line-5 is the warming up. The first 13secs of Cold Rain & Snow are clipped on SBDs. With shows at 8p & 11:30p, and three bands, this set had to be more concise, sticking to mostly straightforward versions. There was room on Dick's 4 for much more from this night. The current album was Live/Dead, and if you went to the early show expecting that, you were mistaken! But then, you got much more. These followed a cancelled showcase club gig the night before. The two shows from this night sit as average among those from the month, but at one time they occupied a vaunted spot in tape collections, representing '70 itself (along with the next night). Just because this is well-known, a Dick's Picks, on Grayfolded, etc. I've always thought this 2nd set felt like they were having a fucking blast - to hell with the audience and the requests, we're going to just jam out and see where it takes us. The Dead cover so much territory across their repertoire, so I understand why some might want more song selection and styles, but if you're looking for hot grooves, look no further.Ass-shaking grooves, at that. Maybe not in an experimental way, but certainly in a groove way. This is stripped-down, straight-ahead, punch-you-in-the-face music, yet you can tell they are intensely listening to each other, playing off of one another, exploring new areas. I could (and do) listen to this frequently when I want to get down with some heavy groove-infested jammng. C+?!! I guess this is a classic case of people likes what they likes. I am struggling to understand Mind Wonderin's review, particularly on the Late Show 2nd Set. I'm going to go put on this show, have toke or two, and let my mind wander. Hey, don't get me wrong, some of those Ramblin Roses in the 80's got a little tired but then, next thing you know, in 2nd set, Garcia stays on stage all through the most amazing drums you've heard and into space, then rock the rest of the set and close out with Day Tripper!! I've been listening to them for 45 years now, attended 100 plus shows, and countless listens to shows from all eras and I still am amazed, energized, and uplifted by the depth and breadth of their music. (I love 90s shows too but that's another topic).Their evolution is remarkable to say the least.

I love 60's, 70's, and 80's shows tremendously, but all quite differently. The 'unpinnable-ness' is the core of their very being. Spare us all, Mind Wondrin, and go post your crap somewhere else.Īs for reviews and ratings, they are particularly moot when discussing the Grateful Dead. That's what happens when you type with your head completely up your ass. Mind Wondrin types extremely long, detailed reviews all of which is complete, useless horseshit.
